Concerns We Support
Back Pain & Sciatica
Desk hours, driving and old injuries leave the lower back tight and aching. Warm oil therapies and Kati Vasti offer a traditional route to ease it.
Long commutes on Sheikh Zayed Road, eight hours at a desk, and weekends spent lifting children or luggage: lower back pain is one of the most common reasons people walk into our Jumeirah clinic. Some arrive with a dull ache that never fully leaves, others with sharp, radiating discomfort that runs down the back of the leg.
Ayurveda has spent centuries refining warm, oil-based therapies for exactly this pattern of stiffness and nerve-related discomfort. At 22 Ayur, back care starts with an assessment of how your pain behaves: when it appears, what aggravates it, and how your posture, sleep and digestion feed into it. The therapy plan follows from that, never the other way around.
How Ayurveda reads back pain
Classical Ayurveda describes most lower back complaints as a Vata imbalance: dryness and depletion in the tissues that support the spine, often aggravated by long sitting, irregular routines and poor sleep. Radiating pain along the leg, traditionally called Gridhrasi and known today as sciatica, is read the same way, with the nerve pathway irritated by that underlying dryness and compression.
The classical response is the opposite of dryness: warmth, oil and rhythm. Medicated oils are chosen for their warming, nourishing properties and applied through steady, repeated therapies so heat penetrates the deeper tissue rather than only the skin.
What a back care plan at 22 Ayur can include
Kati Vasti is the centrepiece therapy for the lower back: a reservoir of warm medicated oil is held directly over the lumbar spine inside a ring of herbal dough, bathing the area in continuous warmth. Around it, your plan may add Sweda with Kizhi, where warm herbal poultices are pressed along the back muscles, Pichu, where oil-soaked cloth rests on the painful segment, and Dhanyamla Dhara for stubborn inflammation.
For day-to-day relief between sessions, a focused Back & Shoulder Massage keeps the muscles supple. Where the picture fits, our practitioners may also suggest Hijama wet cupping, which is traditionally sought for chronic back and muscle tension. Courses typically run 7 to 14 sessions for long-standing complaints; single sessions help, but the classical results come from repetition.

Important to know
22 Ayur is a wellness clinic, not a hospital. Our therapies offer traditional, supportive care; they do not diagnose, cure or replace medical treatment, and we will always encourage you to see a medical doctor for diagnosed conditions, severe symptoms or anything sudden and unexplained. Every plan starts with an assessment, and our practitioners will tell you plainly what our care can and cannot do for your situation.

Can Ayurveda cure back pain or sciatica?
No responsible clinic promises a cure. Ayurvedic therapies are traditionally used to support relief from back stiffness and nerve-related discomfort, and many guests report meaningful easing over a course of sessions. For severe, sudden or worsening pain, numbness or weakness, see a medical doctor first; our therapies work best alongside proper medical care.
How many sessions will I need?
That depends on how long the pain has been there and how your body responds. A typical course for a long-standing complaint is 7 to 14 sessions over two to three weeks. After an initial assessment, our practitioners will recommend a realistic plan rather than an open-ended one.
Is Kati Vasti safe if I have a disc problem?
Kati Vasti is a gentle, non-forceful therapy, and warmth over the lumbar area is generally well tolerated. That said, disc conditions vary widely. Bring your reports to the first visit; our practitioners will adapt the plan and will tell you plainly if a therapy is not appropriate for your case.
Should I stop my physiotherapy or medication?
No. Continue whatever your doctor or physiotherapist has prescribed. Ayurvedic care at 22 Ayur is supportive and sits comfortably alongside conventional treatment.
