Dhoomapanam
Medicated herbal smoke is gently inhaled through the nostrils, clearing congestion and sharpening the senses with each fragrant breath.
Dhoomapanam is an ancient Ayurvedic inhalation therapy where medicated herbal smoke is prepared by burning specific dried herbs on charcoal. The patient inhales the fragrant smoke through the nostrils and exhales through the mouth, allowing the medicinal vapours to cleanse the respiratory passages and sinuses. Rooted in the Ayurvedic texts of Charaka and Sushruta, Dhoomapanam is classified under Panchakarma's post-procedural therapies (Paschat Karma). It is traditionally performed after Nasyam or Vamana to clear residual Kapha from the head and respiratory tract. The herbs used are carefully selected for their antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and decongestant properties. During the treatment, you will be seated upright in a comfortable position. The therapist prepares the herbal smoke blend and guides you through gentle inhalation cycles. The smoke has a pleasant, aromatic quality and the process feels clearing and invigorating, as though a veil has been lifted from your senses.

Frequently Asked Questions
Dhoomapanam uses very specific, purified medicinal herbs in controlled, small quantities. It is not comparable to cigarette smoke. The herbs are anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial. However, it is not recommended for those with asthma or severe respiratory conditions.
The medicated smoke has a pleasant, herbal aroma. Common herbs include Haridra (turmeric), Guggulu (Indian bdellium), and Vacha (calamus root), which produce a warm, grounding fragrance.
As a standalone treatment, once a week is beneficial for chronic sinus issues. As part of a Panchakarma programme, it is performed daily during the course of treatment.
