Ether
Ether referred to as ‘akasha’ in Sanskrit, ether is the element that comes first in yogic and Ayurvedic thinking. Ether is without the firmness of earth, the coolness of water, the heat of fire or even the movement of wind. It is therefore the very essence of ‘emptiness’.
Air
In Ayurveda air represents lightness, motion, breath and oxygen. When the ayurvedic element of air is out of balance it can either cause hyperactivity when it is in excess or fatigue when it is deficient. The imbalance of air can also affect the health of your joints, digestive system and the heart too.
Water
Water is the most essential element of human life next to air. Ayurveda considers water as the elixir of life. Modern day lifestyle undermines the importance of water with various inappropriate practices prevailing among individuals. People are confronted with a flood of advice regarding drinking of water.
Fire
Fire is a powerful element in Ayurveda, closely related to ether which provides the space for it to burn, and air which provides the fuel. This element is one which is closely linked to the mind, expressing itself in obsessions, thoughts and emotions.
Earth
The element earth, called “prithvi” in Sanskrit, is the fifth of the five great elements (pancha mahabhutus). It comes fifth because it evolves out of each of the other four elements (ether, air, fire and water), containing the essence of these elements within it.
Metal
These elements are used intentionally, as Ayurvedic tradition holds that lead, mercury, copper, gold, iron, silver, tin, and zinc may help restore good health and normal function to the human body. Arsenic, aluminum, cadmium, chromium, and nickel may be found in Ayurvedic products as well.
